England coach Roy Hodgson has named a new-look U21 squad for the game against Scotland at Bramall Lane next Tuesday.
Hodgson is in charge of the Under-21 side for the time being because the post of head coach is vacant following the departure of Stuart Pearce, who left after a poor European U21 Championship campaign this summer.
And Hodgson has named eight new faces in a squad which includes just three players, Jack Butland, Connor Wickham and Jonjo Shelvey, who have more than 10 caps at Under-21 level.
The eight players who feature for the first time are goalkeepers Jonathan Bond of Watford and George Long of Sheffield United, full-backs Todd Kane of Chelsea and John Stones of Everton, Sporting Lisbon defender Eric Dier, Manchester United duo Tom Thorpe and Jesse Lingard, and West Brom forward Saido Berahino.
United midfielder Lingard impressed on the club's pre-season trip to Australia and the Far East while Dier is an interesting selection, having moved through Sporting Lisbon's academy after his parents moved to Portugal from Cheltenham when he was 10.
Liverpool's Raheem Sterling is also in the squad, although it had been speculated that he might be picked for the senior side.
Everton's Ross Barkley has been recalled, having not featured for the Under-21s since 2011, and Newcastle forward Sammy Ameobi, who won his last cap nearly two years ago, is also back.
