England and the Republic of Ireland are likely to contest a friendly international at Wembley in London next year.
Recent reports in the media have suggested that the two nations will take on each other in 2013, and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has now confirmed them.
A FAI spokesman said on Tuesday that the reports were "correct in principle".
The FAI will announce details of the friendly later this week, and it is expected that the match will be held in May 2013.
England and Ireland have not met each other since the 1995 clash at Lansdowne Road that was abandoned because of crowd trouble.
