German FA urges Fifa to investigate World Cup vote

The president of the German Football Federation has urged Fifa to investigate the 2022 World Cup vote. Qatar's bid to host the tournament was successful at November's vote but Fifa has since been thrown into turmoil by allegations of corruption. Theo Zwanziger, head of the German FA (DFB), does not believe the current situation is acceptable and has called for an immediate inquiry. "There is a considerable degree of suspicion that one cannot simply sweep aside, and I must expect that awarding this World Cup under these conditions needs to be examined anew," he told German television. Zwanziger added that he did not expect the Fifa presidential election to be delayed despite recent events. Sepp Blatter will stand unopposed on Wednesday after solitary opponent Mohamed Bin Hammam withdrew from the process following his suspension by an ethics committee amid bribery allegations. Bin Hammam was banned by Fifa on Sunday following allegations that the Asian confederation president and Jack Warner had offered bribes to delegates at a Caribbean Football Union meeting in Trinidad. Bin Hammam was also referred to in an email sent by Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke to vice-president Warner indicating the 2022 World Cup had been 'bought', which was made public over the weekend. Valcke later attempted to clarify his meaning by insisting the email referred to Qatar using their 'financial strength' to legitimately lobby for votes.
