Czech star wants to finish career in home country

Aston Villa midfielder Patrik Berger has his sights firmly set on a return home to either Slavia or Sparta Prague. The Czech international has struggled to cement a first-team spot at Villa Park despite boss Martin O'Neill saying the 34-year-old could make an impact for the side's European push, but Berger can leave for free in the summer. "I will be returning to the Czech Republic," he told Sport. "I live in Prague so I would like to play there. From Slavia I went to play abroad, there is Smica (Vladimir Smicer) and custodian Venca Petrak who was my best man at my wedding. "On the other hand, I grew up at Sparta. I cannot say where I will play," Berger added. The midfielder has been subject of transfer speculation with Portsmouth and a string of MLS sides said to have tabled a bid during the January transfer window. A Sparta Prague spokesman Jakub Otava added: "There are several players we are willing to sign but we will definitely not be anymore specific about it."
