Italian champions held in season opener, Bayer romp home

Inter Milan were held on the opening weekend of the new Serie A season while Bordeaux lead the way in Ligue 1. Bayer Leverkusen are setting the pace in Germany's Bundesliga after thrashing bottom-of-the-table Freiburg. Feyenoord climbed into top spot in Holland ahead of Steve McClaren's FC Twente with an emphatic 4-0 success. Elsewhere, Rangers maintained the pressure on Celtic and Hibs with a stunning 2-1 success at Hearts with only 10 men.
Serie A
The Serie A table has an unfamiliar look about it early on with Inter not at the top of the table after the champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Bari. Samuel Eto'o netted a debut goal for the Nerazzurri, although Vitali Kutuzov ensured Jose Mourinho's side surprisingly dropped points. It was happier news for Inter's city rivals AC Milan as they won 2-1 at Siena. Pato's brace gave manager Leonardo a winning start at the helm. Genoa lead the way after seeing off Roma 3-2 on home soil, although Chievo currently are rock bottom after slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Juventus.
Bundesliga
Bayer Leverkusen have surpassed Schalke and Wolfsburg at the summit of the Bundesliga after thrashing new-boys Freiburg 5-0. Tranquillo Barnetta and Eren Derdiyok both scored braces as the visitors ran riot at the Badenova-Stadion. Schalke were held to a goalless draw by Hoffenheim while Wolfsburg suffered their first defeat of the campaign after losing 4-2 on home soil to Hamburg. Surprisingly Bayern Munich remain without a win three games into the new season after slipping to a 2-1 defeat to unbeaten Mainz.
Ligue 1
Champions Bordeaux possess the only perfect record in Ligue 1 this new season after Marseille and Nancy dropped points. Les Girondins made light work of Nice on Sunday with a second-half blitz contributing to a 4-0 success. Once Jussie broke the deadlock a second-half brace from Yoann Gourcuff and a fourth from Alou Diarra completed the rout. It has proved a dreadful start to the campaign for the likes of Valenciennes, Grenoble, St Etienne and Auxerre, who remain pointless three games into the new season. Valenciennes were beaten at home 3-2 by PSG, Grenoble lost on home soil 2-1, newly-promoted Boulogne triumphed 1-0 at St Etienne while Auxerre were trounced 3-0 by Lyon.
Eredivisie
Feyenoord's impressive start to the new season continued on Sunday as they brushed aside Roda JC 4-0 at De Kuip. Sekou Cisse opened the scoring early on with ex-Newcastle man Jon Dahl Tomasson doubling their lead with his third goal of the season. Jonathan de Guzman's 39th-minute effort killed off the visitors' hopes of an unlikely comeback and the Canadian-born forward grabbed a second goal late on. FC Twente maintained their unbeaten start against RKC Waalwijk, although they made hard work of beating the lowly side 2-1. Ajax failed to respond to losing to PSV last weekend after being held by Sparta while their great rivals knocked off NAC Breda by a 3-1 scoreline.
SPL
There remains a three-way battle at the summit of the SPL table with Celtic, Hibernian and Rangers all maintaining their perfect starts. Celtic brushed aside St Johnstone 5-2 at Parkhead, Hibs won comfortably 3-1 at Falkirk, but the story of the weekend came at Tynecastle. Gers were 1-0 and a man down in Edinburgh, but battled back in the second before claiming a last-gasp 2-1 win thanks to Kris Boyd's penalty. Hearts, Falkirk and Hamilton all remain pointless at the foot of the SPL table two games into the new season.
Best of the rest
Anderlecht continue to lead the way in Belgium following a 2-0 win at Zulte-Waregem while second-placed Genk won at Westerlo. Braga's surprise 2-1 success at Sporting means they command the only 100 per cent record in Portugal, Porto are fourth after beating Nacional. There was a reduced fixture list in Greece with two matches postponed due to the wildfire spreading through Athens. The AEK Athens and Olympiakos derby was called off, along with Panionios' clash with PAOK Salonika. Panathinaikos romped to a 3-0 success over Ergotelis while there were also wins for Aris Salonika, Iraklis and Kavala.
