Former Chelsea and Juventus forward Adrian Mutu is poised to sign for FC Pune City in the Indian Super League, Sky sources understand.

The Romanian has been in talks with several Indian sides but is understood to have chosen the league’s Pune franchise who have a technical partnership with Serie A side Fiorentina.

Mutu had a five-year spell at Fiorentina ending in 2011 after joining the Viola from Juventus following the termination of his contract at Chelsea.

The 35-year-old made his name at Parma before becoming one of 13 players to join Chelsea in 2003, as owner Roman Abrahamovich began his overhaul of the west London side.

But a failed drugs test saw the four-time Romanian Footballer of the Year’s stay at Stamford Bridge cut short, resulting in Chelsea pursuing the player for damages for breach of contract.

Mutu has 77 international appearances to his name and is Romania’s joint highest goalscorer with 35 goals, alongside former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder Gheorge Hagi.

Meanwhile, the Indian Super League’s Chennai franchise have signed former Inter, Manchester United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre.

The 37-year-old will play alongside former Manchester City midfielder Elano and ex-Manchester United winger Bojan Djordic at Chennayin.

Marco Materazzi – the team’s player-manager – arrived in India on Saturday to begin preparing his side ahead of the inaugural league which starts on October 12.
