Football legend Alessandro Del Piero and actor Patrick Dempsey are joining forces in a bid to compete in the famous Le Mans 24-hour race.
The 38-year-old is a motorsport fanatic and has formed Dempsey/Del Piero Racing alongside the Grey's Anatomy star.
They will enter two cars in the American Le Mans Series and have applied for entry into the 24-hour classic in France in June.
Dempsey, an amateur racer, will drive alongside veteran US racers Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti if the team's entry to Le Mans is accepted but 2006 World Cup winner Del Piero is not expected to get behind the wheel.
He said: "I have had a passion for motorsport since I was a young boy growing up in Italy.
"I am thrilled at the opportunity to team with Patrick.
"We expect to compete at a very high level and our central focus will be on winning world championships."
The team will announce further details about the car and driver line-up in the coming weeks.
Demspey added: "I am excited to join forces with Alessandro and compete at the highest levels of racing.
"Alessandro's passion for winning and leadership skills will be invaluable, and he will play an important role in the development and direction of the team."
Del Piero currently plays for Australian A-League side Sydney FC.
