Sky Sports analyses the British clubs' performances in the Champions League on Wednesday night as Arsenal progressed but Manchester City were eliminated.

Sky Sports analyses the British clubs' mixed fortunes in the Champions League on Wednesday.

There was disappointment for Manchester City as they were unable to find a winner at the Etihad Stadium and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against 10-men Real Madrid. The draw means City are out of the Champions League at the group stage for the second consecutive season. In stark contrast, Arsenal safely negotiated the group stage for the 13th successive year thanks to a 2-0 win over Montpellier.

Manchester City 1 Real Madrid 1

Highlight
The moment Sergio Aguero converted from the spot seconds after Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off must have given Manchester City hope they could pull off a memorable win but that was as good as it got for Roberto Mancini's men.
Lowlight
Maicon's defending for Real Madrid's goal was wretched and meant City were on the back foot inside the first 10 minutes in a game they needed to win.
Man of the Match
Aguero did more than anyone to make things happen for Manchester City and scored the equaliser from the penalty spot. But he will regret his tame effort that was brilliantly saved by Iker Casillas just after the hour mark.
Referee
Gianluca Rocchi made some curious decisions and was perhaps a little quick to book players. He also angered Cristiano Ronaldo for refusing to award several clear fouls and the penalty decision was a little soft.
Opta Fact
Manchester City had 65.4 per cent of possession and attempted 272 more passes than the visitors.
Sky Sports Verdict
Sky Sports' Ruud Gullit on Manchester City's switch to a back-three: "I don't see the advantage at the moment of the system they are playing. There doesn't seem to be any philosophy behind it."

Arsenal 2 Montpellier 0

Highlight
Lukas Podolski's sublime left-foot volley for Arsenal's second goal after a one-two with Olivier Giroud.
Lowlight
Arsenal failed to break the deadlock in a first half of few chances at the Emirates.
Man of the Match
Podolski topped off his performance with a fine goal.
Referee
Turkish official Firat Aydinus had no contentious issues to deal with and allowed play to flow while also handing out five yellow cards.
Opta Fact
French champions Montpellier managed just one shot on target at the Emirates Stadium.
Sky Sports Verdict
Sky Sports' Nigel Winterburn: "I think Arsene Wenger may even try to add to this squad in January. I think he genuinely believes he has got the makings of a good team here."
