Matt Phillips: Netted a superb brace for Blackpool at Cardiff
Team of the week
Kelvin Davis - Southampton
The title-chasing Saints could only manage a goalless draw at in-form Birmingham but the result could have been much more damaging had it not been for the steady hands of Davis between the sticks. The Blues had the best two chances of the clash and the keeper dealt with both of them, flinging himself full length to turn Marlon King's low, skidding shot behind before denying Adam Rooney with a diving save at the striker's feet.
Frank Simek - Carlisle
Carlisle kept themselves firmly in the promotion chase with a 2-1 triumph at home to rock-bottom Chesterfield and right-back Simek played a key role in the win. The American produced an impressive performance to help keep the Spireites at bay after Drew Talbot's early goal.
Jamie McCombe - Huddersfield
League One high-fliers Huddersfield were held to a 1-1 draw at home to MK Dons but McCombe contributed a fine display to help earn a share of a spoils. The defender was on target with his second goal in three league games to open the scoring for the Terriers, heading home Kallum Higginbotham's cross on the stroke of half-time before the hosts were pegged by Stephen Gleeson's free-kick after the break.
Winston Reid - West Ham
The Hammers went four points clear at the top of the Championship with a 2-1 home victory over Millwall and it was unlikely hero Reid that popped up with the winner. The London rivals were tied at 1-1 until the 69th minute, when the New Zealand centre-half pounced on the ball and smashed it home from 20 yards to mark just his second goal for the club.
Ben Parker - Carlisle
Another Carlisle man who earns a place in our backline is goalscorer Parker. The Spireites had taken the lead early on when Talbot fired home but Parker bagged the crucial equaliser with 15 minutes remaining to inspire the Cumbrians' triumph, as well as putting in a hard-working shift at the back.
Jermaine Johnson - Sheffield Wednesday
Alarm bells were ringing at Hillsborough when the promotion-chasing Owls fell a goal behind to lowly Yeovil Town just before the break but Johnson grabbed a crucial equaliser in the second half to inspire an impressive comeback. The winger blasted into the top corner from 30 yards to mark his third goal in four games and set the stage for Reda Johnson's late winner.
John Eustace - Watford
Hornets captain Eustace enjoyed an afternoon to remember at home to Barnsley as he netted both goals in the hosts' 2-1 triumph. Ahead of the clash the midfielder had notched just two strikes in his previous 28 games in all competitions but he found some firepower against the Tykes, handing his side the lead with an acrobatic scissor kick before doubling the advantage in the second half.
Robert Snodgrass - Leeds
Snodgrass played an instrumental role in Leeds' first match since the sacking of manager Simon Grayson, helping them to a 3-0 triumph at Bristol City. The Scotsman spearheaded a convincing Whites display, slotting home a low shot five minutes before half-time to open the scoring and pave the way for the visitors' win.
Michael Chopra - Ipswich
The Tractor Boys came from behind to oust Coventry 3-2 and it was Chopra who masterminded the comeback. The former Cardiff man hauled the visitors level in the second half before grabbing a last-gasp winner five minutes into injury-time, nodding home Andy Drury's cross to settle a thrilling encounter.
Matt Phillips - Blackpool
Seasiders ace Phillips is becoming a familiar fixture in our team and this week is no exception following his heroics at Cardiff. Namesake Kevin Phillips had pulled the Tangerines level in the second half and the young forward netted a late brace to hand the visitors a 3-1 win, taking his goal tally this term to 15 in all competitions.
Matt Whichelow - Wycombe
Struggling Wycombe dragged themselves out of the League One drop zone with a welcome 2-1 home success over Tranmere and Whichelow was the brains behind the win. The 20-year-old, making his first Wanderers appearance after joining on loan from Watford, fired home in the 23rd minute to cancel out Adam McGurk's opener before turning creator and setting up Gareth Ainsworth for the winner.
