South African winger hoping to impress Freedman

South Africa international Siphiwe Tshabalala has been offered a trial at Crystal Palace, with Dougie Freedman keen to take a look at the winger. The 27-year-old, who has won 67 caps for his country, has arrived in England and will spend 10 days training with the promotion-chasing Eagles. Tshabalala is currently contracted to the Kaizer Chiefs, but that deal is set to expire in the summer. He would be available as a free agent at the end of the season, so Freedman is prepared to offer him an opportunity to impress.

A Chiefs spokesman has confirmed that a trial has been put in place, but denied that goalkeeper Itulelen Khune will also be travelling to south London. "We've spoken to Dougie Freedman and he said he's going to have a look at Siphiwe over the next 10 days," said the spokesman. "But it sounds like the goalkeeper may be a non-starter at the moment because he is only interested in looking at Tshabalala right now." Tshabalala spent time with Nottingham Forest last season, but failed to earn a deal, and has also been linked with SPL giants Rangers in recent weeks.
