Spain midfielders Xabi Alonso and Cesc Fabregas believe striker Fernando Torres can go on to be the best player in the world.

Torres capped a prolific season with his club Liverpool as he struck the only goal of the game in Spain's Euro 2008 final against Germany.

And after playing alongside the 24-year-old for club and country, Alonso has talked up Torres' potential to be the world's best player.

"It was a great strike from Fernando and on Sunday he showed he is the man who performs on the big nights," Alonso said in The Sun.

Massive

"That goal has been key. He can be the best player in the world. Winning against Germany is a massive step for him and for us."

Arsenal midfielder Fabregas was also full of praise for Torres, explaining that he had a feeling the striker would set the final at Ernst Happel stadium alight.

"Yes, Fernando can be the best in the world," Fabregas said. "This is about the Spanish team and not the individual performance but I told him the final would be his game and he would score - and he got that goal."
