Venables fears backlash from Bilic's side

Terry Venables believes Israel's victory over Russia has highlighted why England should be wary of Croatia. Russia needed to win their last two games to reach Euro 2008 at England's expense, but they slipped to a surprise 2-1 defeat against an Israel side that had no chance of qualifying. A point would now be enough for England to seal their place in next summer's tournament but Venables is refusing to underestimate Croatia, even though their spot in Euro 2008 is already guaranteed and they lost 2-0 to Macedonia on Saturday. "I cannot praise the Israelis enough. It was a fine testament to their desire to perform for their country," Venables told The Sun. "But it also shows why we have to be so focused when we meet Croatia. "Like Israel, they will have nothing to play for because their destiny is already decided.

Pride at stake

"But the Croats' pride will have been hurt by losing in Macedonia on Saturday night and they will want to finish top. "Their confidence will take a big hit if they lose again." Venables is nevertheless confident England will finish the job, insisting the players have been buoyed by Russia's defeat. He explained: "We know our job isn't done but there can be no excuses from players or staff. We are fortunate to get a chance, we know that, and we have to take it with both hands. "The mood is good and we are looking forward to it. We mean business."
