Stephen Hunt believes Terry Venables would be the right man to take charge of Republic of Ireland.
The Football Association of Ireland is conducting its search for a new manager after the dismissal of Steve Staunton last month.
Venables is believed to be among the targets to succeed Staunton and Hunt is a big admirer of the former Tottenham manager.
The former England boss is currently assistant manager to Steve McClaren, but his future could be jeopardy if England fail to qualify for Euro 2008.
Hunt has heard good things about Venables from Reading team-mate Nicky Shorey, who has worked with Venables at international level.
Respect"A new man will bring in fresh ideas," Hunt told The Times. "And if you spend big, I suppose, like anything, you get big.
"Venables has been mentioned and all the players seem to have a lot of respect for him. That's important. Nicky seems to like him. He was a bit unlucky when he coached Australia, but he'd be a good man to have."
