Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry killed off the Faroe Islands in the first ten minutes to add to the basement boys' misery as they were hammered 6-0.
France gave Group B bottom club, the Faroes, a tough task early doors when Anelka tapped in Franck Ribery's cross (6) and Henry curled his effort into the bottom right-hand corner (8).
Lyon's youngster, Karim Benzema, came off the bench for Anelka on 46 minutes, and the 19-year-old was quick to make his mark when he headed home Ribery's free-kick (50).
Jerome Rothen (66) scored the fourth with a stunning free-kick, Benzema added his second of the game on 81 minutes and midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa ended the rout in injury-time.
Italy's late kick-off with Georgia saw them win 2-0 thanks to Andrea Pirlo's 44th minute effort and Fabio Grosso made the points theirs on 84.
Italy now sit in second place, one point behind leaders Scotland who had a superb 3-1 win at home to Ukraine.
