Italy are 'optimistic' that Luca Toni will be fit to face France in the forthcoming European Championship 2008 qualifier.
The striker injured his thigh while playing for Bayern Munich and it was initially feared that he was definitely out of the Euro 2008 fixtures against France on Sunday and Ukraine four days later.
However, it is now hoped that the former Fiorentina forward will be available for selection by coach Roberto Donadoni.
"The situation is improving," Andrea Ferretti, Italy's team doctor, told the Italian media. "On Friday we will decide, but I'm optimistic."
Toni has made 21 appearances for Italy and has scored seven goals in that time including two against Ukraine in the quarter-final of the 2006 World Cup.
