Ashley Young is hoping to banish bad memories of the Europa League from his time at Aston Villa when Manchester United enter the tournament on Thursday night.
United will make their Europa League bow against Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA in first leg of their last 32 tie having crashed out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stage.
Winger Young, who joined the Red Devils from Villa last summer, has endured disappointment in the tournament in the past, most notably when his penalty miss proved crucial as the Midlanders crashed out to Rapid Vienna at the first hurdle in August 2009.
Rapid inflicted another defeat on Villa a year later, with Young playing in the home leg after sitting out the 1-1 draw in Austria.
The 26-year-old England international is keen to put those disappointments behind him and help United to success in the tournament.
Different
"No, it's not been a good memory at all for me with Aston Villa not getting too far in the competition," he told MUTV.
"Hopefully, this time around, it can be a different story and we can go a lot further and hopefully win it.
"United have had great history throughout the years and Ajax have a great history as well. I don't think you'd have put this fixture together at the start of the season but it's a great tie and we're really looking forward to it."
Young admits it is disappointing to have missed out on reaching the knockout phase of the Champions League in his first season at Old Trafford.
"From the time I signed here, I said playing in big competitions was what I wanted to do," he said.
"The Champions League is one of them obviously and it was obviously disappointing to go out in the way that we did. But we've got the chance to go into the Europa League and we're really looking to go on and win that now."
