Sky Sports analyses the British clubs' performances in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Manchester United, Chelsea and, famously, Celtic all recorded wins on their travels in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. Here, Sky Sports analyses the highs and the lows, the performances of the referees and gets the opinion of expert pundits.

Cluj 1 Manchester United 2

Highlight
If Robin van Persie's first goal was a tad ugly (missed his header, in off the shoulder), his second was a thing of beauty. A deft, first-time left-foot volley from a Wayne Rooney pass was lovely.
Lowlight
Manchester United's defence was hardly troubled throughout but that did not stop Cluj getting on the scoresheet in the first half as they took advantage of the huge gaps in the Premier League club's rearguard.
Man of the Match
Robin van Persie got the brace but Wayne Rooney wins the award. He played virtually in midfield, dropping off Van Persie and Javier Hernandez and they cannot complain about the service. Rooney was magnificent.
Referee
Alberto Undiano Mallenco had a pretty uneventful night. He did well to ignore Tom Cleverley's protests for a penalty when he clearly just fell over in the box.
Opta Fact
United had 72 per cent possession. This is not a surprise, as they bossed the game before they went behind and once they had their noses in front they were happy to keep it. Sir Alex Ferguson will be worried that Cluj managed to score with just 28% of the ball.
Sky Sports Verdict
Matt Le Tissier: "Van Persie and Rooney are two world-class players and they looked as if they were on exactly the same wavelength. I think there is plenty of encouragement there for United fans and for Sir Alex Ferguson to think that this combination will work."

Nordsjaelland 0 Chelsea 4

Highlight
Alongside David Luiz's eye-catching free-kick, the performance of Juan Mata was obviously pleasing for Chelsea as, despite a quiet start to the match, he continued his fine, early season form by scoring two goals. But the display of Nordsjaelland cannot be ignored. The European minnows admirably stuck to their passing principles.
Lowlight
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo will have been slightly concerned by the lethargic outing of his team for large passages. It was only when Eden Hazard replaced Victor Moses on 65 minutes that there was some spark.
Man of the Match
Juan Mata's two goals mean he was the standout player. Special mention should also go to Nordsjaelland centre-back Jores Okore, who defended excellently and showed a great range of passing.
Referee
Marijo Strahonja was largely unnoticed, which is generally considered to be a sign of a positive performance for a referee. The Croatian only showed one yellow card and that was to Ivan Runje in the 77th minute.
Opta Fact
Chelsea lost the ball on 131 occasions compared to Nordsjaelland's 111. Di Matteo will know his defending champions will not get away with such wastefulness against better opponents.
Sky Sports Verdict
Glenn Hoddle: "Chelsea still looked as if, with the ball, they had another two or three gears to slip in to. They have got that power."

Spartak 2 Celtic 3

Highlight
Georgios Samaras' stoppage-time winner which sealed a famous victory for Celtic in Russia.
Lowlight
Emmanuel Emenike's brace either side of the interval. In particular, Fraser Forster should have done better when he could only parry a shot in the lead-up to the second goal.
Man of the Match
Gary Hooper scored and produced a goal assist as he led the line excellently for Celtic.
Referee
Tony Chapron generally had a good game, although there was some confusion in the lead-up to Juan Insaurralde's red card. Insaurralde clearly pulled Hooper back but at first the French referee played on. Then, after presumably taking some instruction from one of his assistants, he showed the Argentinian the red card.
Opta Fact
Celtic enjoyed mixed possession in the two halves. Spartak dominated in the first period with 67.9 per cent. But Celtic had 53.1% in the second period as they pushed on to seal a famous win.
Sky Sports Verdict
John Collins: "The key player was Hooper. He had an outstanding performance. Every time the ball came up to him, he held it up. He was a constant threat."
