Like the first encounter, Messi put Barca ahead in the first half, but this time the Danes responded immediately as Claudemir levelled quickly and the sides cancelled each other out, preventing Barca from securing their progression. Perhaps the most interesting flashpoint was a heated touchline row between Guardiola and opposite number Stale Solbakken.

Winger Pedro scored in each half with Messi making his obligatory contribution in Athens as the Blaugrana rubber-stamped their knockout-stage spot as Group D winners.

Barca dominated their English counterparts and led through David Villa's first-half strike. Further goals seemed inevitable but the visitors were stunned by Robin van Persie's powerful equaliser and undone by Andrey Arshavin's winner in a stellar display of Arsenal counter-attacking.

If the first leg was exciting, the second was dramatic. Barca again dominated possession and Messi's delightful goal levelled the aggregate score. However, Sergio Busquets' own goal gifted Arsenal a crucial away goal. But Robin Van Persie's controversial second booking for dissent incensed the Gunners before Xavi's strike and Messi's penalty wrapped up the 4-2 aggregate win.

Andres Iniesta, Alves, Gerard Pique, Seydou Keita and Xavi all got involved as Barca routed the over-achieving Ukrainians, who had been quietly upbeat about their chances heading into the tie.
