Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim criticises officials for Juventus penalty

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim was unhappy with the referee after his side lost the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final 1-0 to Juventus on Tuesday night.

The Serie A champions secured their hard-earned victory thanks to Arturo Vidal’s 57th-minute penalty at the Juventus Stadium.

However, Jardim claimed after the match that the officials should have awarded a free-kick, rather than a spot-kick, to the home side in the build-up to the incident that ended with Monaco defender Ricardo Carvalho fouling Juve striker Alvaro Morata in the area.

"The result was created by an incorrect decision by the team (of officials) that referees," he said. "This result is not a fair reflection of what happened on the field."

Were Juventus lucky to receive a penalty after Monaco's Ricardo Carvalho brought down Alvaro Morata?

And Monaco captain Andrea Raggi agreed with his manager, telling Sky Sport Italia: “Seeing the incident, it's outside the area. You could argue that it continues inside and it is without doubt a foul. The referee had only a few seconds to decide."

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri, though, was delighted with the result, especially given that his side did not allow their opponents to take an away goal with them back to France for the return leg a week on Wednesday.

"It was a good result," said Allegri. "Not conceding a goal at home gives us a small advantage. Monaco are a very-well organised team."
