Luis Suarez scored a double on his return to England with Barcelona, but admits Manchester City are still in the tie after Lionel Messi saw a late penalty saved in the 2-1 Champions League last-16 first-leg win.

The former Liverpool forward struck twice in the first-half, but Sergio Aguero pulled one back for City before Gael Clichy was given a second booking to give Barca a numerical advantage.

Joe Hart kept City in it with a last minute penalty save from Messi, before the Argentine headed wide with an open goal in front of him on the rebound.

And Suarez, who was still on the pitch on a hat-trick when Messi stepped up, says the incidents in the late stages of the game are a big plus for City.

"I think that is a positive thing for them," said Suarez. "If it had gone in, it would have been a different scenario.

"But at 2-1, there's a chance for them."

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, meanwhile, believes his side did well to come away from the Etihad Stadium with victory after holding off City’s fightback, but insisting Messi’s late miss would not have killed the contest off.

"I think it's a deserved victory and we need to be proud of victories like that,” he said.

“This type of tie is very difficult. It could have been 2-2.

“We are very happy with the result and even if it was 3-1 the tie would still be open,"

The two sides meet for the return leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday, March 18.
