Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar is set to return to the Schalke line-up this weekend after five months out with a knee injury.

The ex-Real Madrid striker was sidelined after tearing a medial ligament in his right knee against Wolfsburg.

With Schalke set to face Huntelaar's former side in the last 16 of the Champions League next month, the 30-year-old is aiming to make his comeback on Sunday at Hamburg.

"The knee feels good, I don't have any problems any more," he told German reporters.

"My longest phase of conditioning is finally over - training alone is always tough and isn't much fun, but now I'm as fit as a fiddle.

"The hunting season is now on."

Despite the Dutchman's eagerness to reclaim a spot in the Schalke squad this weekend, manager Jens Keller remains realistic about Hunterlaar's chances of starting the game.

"He hasn't played for five and a half months, he didn't play in our warm-up game last weekend, which is normal after such a long break," Keller said.

"It would have been important to have at least used him off the bench."

Hamburg captain Rafael van der Vaart is hoping that his Dutch colleague, nicknamed the 'Hunter', will be rested for their clash.

He said: "I hope he's not playing. He's a great player and always worth a goal or two."
