Aaron Ramsey, who claimed Arsenal's winner at Marseille, feels it was crucial to win in the South of France.
The Gunners got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start thanks to Ramsey and Theo Walcott, with Marseille registering in injury time through Jordan Ayew.
"We have a tough group. It was vital to get three points and get off to a good
start here," he said.
"It was a difficult night, the pitch was sticky and slow, we didn't quite get
the rhythm in our passing going and the quick pace as we pass it.
"In the end I think we deserved it."
Ramsey now has six goals this season - four of those in Europe - and he admits he is very happy with his own form.
"I'm happy with the way I'm playing at the moment," said Ramsey.
"I'm playing with confidence and I'm getting into positions and putting them
"I felt like I have been getting into the these positions throughout my career but perhaps I have not had the composure which I now seem to be doing."
Arsenal have now won 10 successive away games, which Ramsey says is a huge boost.
"It is important to keep the run going," he said.
"Our away form has been fantastic and 10 in a row is fantastic - hopefully we can keep building on that."
