Argentine playmaker plans to stick around at Stade Velodrome

Lucho Gonzalez admits he was keen to leave Marseille over the summer, but claims he is now planning to see out his contract. The Argentine playmaker still has two years left to run on his deal at Stade Velodrome. He accepts that the current economic climate will make it difficult for him to secure a switch, so he is prepared to stay put. A move to the likes of Arsenal, Malaga, Inter Milan and Roma was touted during the transfer window, but Lucho insists his focus is now back on helping Marseille recover from a slow start to the season. "My intentions were very clear - I wanted to leave," he said. "Today I am at Marseille and I am very happy to be here. I am under contract and I want to fulfil that agreement.

Contacts

"There were lots of talks over the summer but the contacts didn't come to anything. "Marseille had to get some money back for me. It is not my concern who pays the fee but the reality of the market now is that very few clubs are willing to pay a lot of money for a 30-year-old. "I have turned the page and I feel fine. "We have shown in the Champions League that we are capable of picking up results. "Can we win the league? I believe we can. Last season we lost a lot of key players but were still able to win the League Cup and compete for the title until the end of the season. We will be among the top teams."
