Brazilian defender set to remain in Portugal

Portuguese giants Benfica have dismissed suggestions that Luisao is set for a New Year departure. The Brazil international has attracted interest from a host of clubs, with Premier League duo Portsmouth and Manchester City believed to be among his admirers. Pompey are reported to have had an approach for the towering defender knocked back over the summer, while City are keen to bolster their ranks during the January transfer window. However, with the 26-year-old under contract at Estadio da Luz until 2010, Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira has moved to quash the rumours regarding an impending exit. "Luisao will not be leaving in January," he said. "He is a key man in our squad and we are not prepared to damage the team. "The coach (Quique Flores) is seeking continuity and we will not be discussing any deal with anybody. "Our strategy for the future does not include the sale of our best players."
