Ajax moved level on points with FC Twente after beating Excelsior and ADO Den Haag earned their first win in five games.
Reigning Eredivisie champions Ajax eased to a comfortable 4-1 win over 10-man Excelsior at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Jan Vertonghen's first-half brace, either side of Samuel Scheimann's red card, set the tone in a dominant performance by Frank De Boer's side.
Darren Maatsen gave Excelsior hope when he scored on the stroke of half-time but two second-half goals in four minutes for Ajax killed off the game, Miralem Sulejmani scoring from the penalty spot before Nicolas Lodeiro added the fourth.
The result means Ajax remain in fourth but are now level on points with FC Twente, while Excelsior stay second bottom, level on points with basement club VVV-Venlo.
David Texeira's first hat-trick for FC Groningen was not enough to seal victory as Melvin Platje scored a last-gasp equaliser for NEC Nijmegen in an action-packed 3-3 draw at the Euroborg Stadion.
Texeira opened the scoring for the home side in the 28th minute only for Abdisalam Ibrahim to equalise two minutes later, however, the Groningen striker added his second after the break to regain the lead.
Platje levelled the score at 2-2 in the 83rd minute with a great strike as NEC thought they had secured a point, but Texeira scored his third almost immediately and looked to have led his side back to winning ways following the 6-1 demolition by PSV last week.
However, Platje had the final word as he scored his second in the dying seconds to pull NEC level for the third time to earn a hard-fought point.
ADO Den Haag earned their first win in five games with a comfortable 3-0 home success against NAC Breda.
Charlton Vicento opened the scoring 11 minutes before half-time and second-half strikes from Jens Toornstra and Marc Hocher made the game safe.
The win lifted ADO six points clear of the bottom three and level with their opponents on 18 points.
Adil Ramzi and Sanharib Malki earned Roda JC their second away win of the season with a goal apiece in the second half as they beat De Graafschap 2-1.
Malki opened the scoring just after the break before Ramzi doubled the visitors' lead in the 65th minute when he slid the ball past De Graafschap goalkeeper Yves de Winter.
Yuri Rose headed a late consolation goal for the home side in a game which never really sprang into life.
The result boosted Roda into ninth place while De Graafschap remained in the relegation zone, two points behind NEC Nijmegen who picked up a point against FC Groningen.
