FC Twente held off the challenge of Ajax to wrap up the Eredivisie title after Steve McClaren's side won 2-0 at NAC Breda.
Going into the final day of the season,
Twente held a one-point lead over Ajax and were able to preserve that gap with success over
NAC.
Bryan Ruiz opened the scoring for Twente midway through the first half, just moments after NAC's Csaba Feher had been sent off.
Miroslav Stoch, who is on loan at Twente from Chelsea, settled any jitters after the interval by scoring the second goal on 74 minutes.
Ajax did their best to put Twente under pressure after a 4-1 triumph at
NEC Nijmegen, with Luis Suarez scoring twice.
Suarez made the breakthrough for Ajax on 15 minutes and Demy de Zeeuw and Marko Pantelic chipped in with further goals before half-time.
The fourth goal arrived from Suarez on 64 minutes before NEC had the final word of the contest when Saudi Ntibazonkiza scored three minutes from the end.
Last season's champions
AZ Alkmaar ended the campaign in fifth spot following a final day 1-1 draw at home to
PSV Eindhoven.
Otman Bakkal fired third-placed PSV into the lead just after the hour mark before Mounir El Hamdaoui levelled with 20 minutes to go.
Feyenoord ended the season in fourth after a thumping 6-2 home win over
Heerenveen, with Roy Makaay grabbing a hat-trick.
Heerenveen took a 12th minute lead through Christian Grindheim, only for Makaay to soon level before the visitors were back in front through Viktor Elm.
Stefan de Vrij equalised again for Feyenoord on 32 minutes and, after Jon Dahl Tomasson had given the hosts the lead on 51 minutes, Makaay went on to complete his hat-trick and Andre Bahia scored a late sixth.
Bottom side
RKC Waalwijk bowed out of the top flight with the remarkable record of not drawing once this season after a 2-1 home defeat to
VVV Venlo.
Hans Mulder gave RKC a 50th minute lead, but VVV levelled through Sandro Calabro and substitute Boymans scored an 83rd minute winner.
Willem II Tilburg warmed up for their relegation play-off by crashing to a 3-2 defeat away to
Roda JC Kerkrade.
Boldiszar Bodor and Mads Junker had given Roda a 2-0 advantage before Marlon Pereira and Said Boutahar brought Willem II back on level terms. Davy de Fauw pounced for an 88th minute winner for Roda.
Sparta Rotterdam are the other side in the relegation play-offs and ended the regular season with a 3-1 defeat at
Groningen.
Koen van de Laak, Matavz and Fredrik Stenman had Groningen in command before Joshua John scored a consolation for Sparta.
Heracles Almelo concluded an excellent campaign in sixth spot after rounding off their season with a 4-2 home win over
ADO Den Haag.
Marko Matic and Everton had Heracles two goals to the good inside seven minutes and Birger Maartens scored the third after Den Haag's Karim Soltani had been sent off.
However, Den Haag briefly threatened a surprise comeback after Timothy Derijck and Antoine van der Linden's own goal gave them hope, only for Heracles to score a late fourth through Darl Douglas.
Utrecht fluffed the chance to finish the season on a winning note after being held to a 2-2 draw at home by
Vitesse Arnhem.
Dries Mertens and Jacob Mulenga had Utrecht 2-0 up, but Vitesse snatched a point through goals from Onur Kaya and Santi Kolk.
