Heerenveen kept themselves firmly in the Eredivisie title hunt as ADO Den Haag boosted their top-flight survival hopes.
Bas Dost scored a goal in each half as Heerenveen enjoyed a 4-2 home success over bottom club Excelsior to close to within a point of leaders AZ Alkmaar.
Mitchell te Vrede had given Excelsior a shock fourth minute lead, but Jeffrey Gouweleeuw levelled for the title hopefuls on 20 minutes.
The home side were in control of the game by half-time after goals within the space of two minutes from Ramon Zomer and Dost before Excelsior replied through Roland Alberg on 71 minutes.
However, Dost's second goal of the night six minutes later sealed the win for Heerenveen to ensure just one point currently separates the top-four clubs in the table.
