Excelsior climbed off the bottom of the Eredivisie table with victory over fellow strugglers VVV Venlo as Vitesse Arnhem edged out NAC Breda.
Bart Schenkeveld scored a goal in each half to lift Excelsior up to third from bottom after a 3-1 home win over 10-man VVV, who now slip to the foot of the standings.
Schenkeveld opened the scoring on the half-hour mark before the visitors had Bryan Linssen sent off before half-time.
A second goal arrived for Schenkeveld on 68 minutes and Darren Maatsen added a third six minutes later before Yannick Wildschut scored a late consolation for VVV.
Vitesse consolidated their position in seventh in the standings after a 1-0 home triumph over mid-table NAC Breda.
Nick Hofs scored the game's only goal after 19 minutes, while NAC had Anthony Lurling sent off in the final minute for a second bookable offence.
Title contenders AZ Alkmaar were denied the chance to go top of the table after their trip to ADO Den Haag was called off due to the bad weather.
