FC ZWOLLE are on the verge of retaining their place in Eredivisie after claiming vicotory in their latest relegation play-off game.
Zwolle won 3-2 at Go Ahead Eagles, but they looked to be heading for a draw after throwing away a two goal advantage.
However, Ivan Cvetkov struck with 13 minutes left to put Zwolle three points clear at the top of Pool A.
The other game in the group saw Helmond Sport claim a very good 3-1 win at Den Bosch.
Goals in the last five minutes from Dennis van Es and Kristof Aelbrecht gave Helmond victory.
With two games left, Helmond are now the only team who can stop Zwolle from retaining their Eredivisie status. Pool B is still wide open and all four teams could yet earn the last place in the Dutch top-flight.
FC Volendam are still top and remain favourites to make a return to Eredivisie, despite going down 3-2 at Excelsior.
The current Eredivisie side have been struggling to find some form in the play-offs, but now they have secured their first win in four games to give themselves on outside chance of survival.
Excelsior were 3-2 winners, but almost let their lead slip after being three goals to the good after an hour.
Volendam struck with goals from Maurice Buys (64) and Cerezo Fung a Wing (74), but the Rotterdam outfit held on for all three points.
Heracles moved into second with a 1-0 win at Emmen.
Thijs Sluijter's goal after just seven minutes was enough for Heracles to claim the victory and move them to within three points of leaders Volendam.
