Peter Bosz`s side travelled to Rotterdam knowing even a win would not help them climb off the foot of the table, but they took the fight to Excelsior from an early stage.
Tim Bakens put the visitors in front inside the opening ten minutes, heading home from a corner, and they doubled their advantage on 16 minutes when Dennis Schulp hit the target.
De Graafschap moved into cruise control when Damien Hertog hit the third on 20 minutes, firing a low shot through a crowd of players after Excelsior failed to clear a corner.
Excelsior, who started the game second from bottom, started a fightback when Said Boutahar (pictured) scored moments before the break.
Brian Pinas brought Excelsior within one when scoring minutes after the restart and Brett Holman looked like he had earned the home side a point with a goal shortly before the hour mark.
However, there was one final twist when Arvid Smit became the hero for De Graafschap with an injury-time winner, sliding the ball home at the far post following good work from Schulp.
De Graafschap are now within two points of Excelsior with four games to play.
