Willem II defender Michel Kreek has called time on his career.

The 34-year-old has been plagued by injuries for a couple of seasons and a new muscle problem prompted him to hang up his boots.

Kreek claims he does not want to continue to collect a wage when he is not able to play and hopes his departure will pave the way for the Tilburgers to bring in fresh blood.

Kreek started his professional career at Ajax and made his debut in the 1989/1990 season before moving on to Italian side Padova in 1994.

Two seasons later he moved on to Perugia before being picked up by Vitesse Arnhem in 1997.

In the summer of 2002 he left Vitesse to sign for Greek giants AEK Athens, but returned to the Netherlands in 2004 when Willem II landed him on a Bosman.

Kreek earned one cap for the Dutch, against Portugal in February 2005.
