Ajax and Groningen booked a place in the UEFA Champions League play-offs.
Ajax and Groningen booked a place in the UEFA Champions League play-offs after Utrecht slipped up at home to Willem II.
With PSV Eindhoven long since confirmed as champions, the key issue on the final day of the Eredivisie season was determining who would join AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord in the play-offs.
Danny Blind's Ajax claimed one of those spots by thrashing RKC Waalwijk 4-2, while Groningen's draw at Twente Enschede ensured they leapfrogged Utrecht for the other berth.
RKC took the lead through Anthony Lurling at home to Ajax, but the visitors were ahead at half time through goals from Johnny Heitinga and a Klaas Jan Huntelaar penalty, after the hosts had Stephan Keller sent off.
Nourdin Boukhari scored early in the second half and a late goal from Huntelaar cemented Ajax's fourth spot in the table. RKC grabbed a last minute consolation through Tim Peters.
A 78th minute goal from Yuri Cornelisse put Groningen into fifth, although they did have to settle for a 1-1 draw at Twente, who equalised two minutes from time through Guillermo Alfonso.
But Alfonso's late leveller made little difference to Groningen, though, after Utrecht were hammered 4-1 at home by Willem II, who are consigned to the promotion/relegation play-offs.
Tom Caluwe had given Utrecht a first minute lead, but Iwan Redan equalised on 17 minutes. He scored again in the second half, after Zsombor Kerekes put Willem II in front, with Martijn Reuser contributing a late fourth.
AZ Alkmaar secured the runners-up spot behind PSV after a 4-2 win away to Heerenveen.
Danny Koevermans and Stein Huysegems scored a brace apiece for AZ, while Heerenveen's goals were supplied by Mark de Vries and Danijel Pranjic.
Feyenoord struggled to overcome bottom club RBC Roosendaal 2-0, with Dirk Kuyt and Pierre van Hooijdonk netting in the last 20 minutes at De Kuip, but only after the visitors' Jose Fortes Rodriguez had been shown the red card.
NAC Breda are in the promotion/relegation play-offs after being hammered 6-2 at home by champions PSV.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Jefferson Farfan both scored twice for PSV, while Mika Vayrynen and Philip Cocu were also on target. NAC netted through Johann Vonlanthen and Timothy Derijck.
Goals in the space of four second half minutes from Ricky van den Bergh and Ivan Cvetkov earned Sparta Rotterdam a 2-0 success at ADO Den Haag.
Sekou Cisse and Simon Cziommer scored in the first half as Roda JC Kerkrade overcame Heracles Almelo 2-1 at home, with the visitors' response coming from Stefaan Tanghe.
Remco van der Schaaf snatched a last minute equaliser for Vitesse Arnhem at home to NEC Nijmegen, who had forged ahead just before half time through Tininho.
AZ will now meet Groningen for a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, while Ajax will tackle for Feyenoord for a similar prize.
Utrecht, Heerenveen, Roda JC Kerkrade and Twente will meet in a play-off for a Uefa Cup spot, while NEC, Vitesse, RKC and Heracles play off for a place in the InterToto Cup.
