Vitesse Arnhem have handed a trial to former Newcastle defender Gary Caldwell.

The 22-year-old, who is available on a free transfer, has headed over to Holland and will be put through his paces by Gelredome chief Edward Sturing.

Caldwell severed his ties with Newcastle at the turn of the year, with manager Sir Bobby Robson informing him he had no future on Tyneside, and he headed to his native Scotland to sign for Hibernian.

Caldwell enjoyed a fruitful spell in the Scottish capital but has failed to earn a new deal with the Edinburgh club and is available on a free transfer.

The defender will turn out for Vitesse on Monday evening, when the club will take on an amateur side from the local area.

Vitesse coach Sturing has been scouring the market for a new defender, following the departures of Bert Konterman and Tim Cornelisse, and a contract could be handed to Caldwell if he impresses this week.
