FC Twente missed the chance to go top of the Eredivisie as Heerenveen kept themselves firmly in an absorbing title race.
Steve McClaren endured a frustrating evening as 2010 champions Twente were held to a 1-1 draw away by lowly ADO Den Haag.
Ebi Smolarek scored after just six minutes for Den Haag, with Glynor Plet's goal on 62 minutes earning Twente a draw which leaves the club a point behind leaders AZ Alkmaar.
Heerenveen are just two points off the pace after an emphatic 4-1 home success over struggling VVV Venlo.
