Cedric van der Gun will not require surgery on his damaged knee.

The Utrecht striker tore cruciate ligaments last week and an operation was thought to be required.

However, surgery has now been ruled out for van der Gun, who will be sidelined for between two and three months.

"It's better that we do it this way instead of immediate surgery," said club doctor Frank van Hellemondt on the club's official website.

Hellemondt has been encouraged by van der Gun's early progress as he begins the long road to recovery.

"The knee ligament is already showing good recovery," he continued.

"For Cedric it is important that the knee gets rest and the strength comes back."
