The home side had shot out to a 3-1 lead at the break, scoring their first two goals in the first nine minutes of the match through Igor Gluscevic and a Dirk Kuyt penalty.
Roda replied through Cristiano but Gluscevic scored his second four minutes before the break, as Utrecht looked in a solid position to take all three points from the lone Dutch Eredivisie match of the day.
However, the visitors made it 3-3 with two goals in the space of five minutes from Yannis Anastasiou and a Patrick Zwaanswijk own-goal.
Utrecht took the lead again with eight minutes remaining as Abdelhali Chaiat made it 4-3 to the home side, but Roda were again able to draw level four minutes later with a second goal from Anastasiou.
The visitors were then forced to finish the match with ten men as Eric Addo was sent off for two bookable offences a minute after Roda made it 4-4.
The result takes Roda a point clear in fourth place and on course for a Uefa Cup spot while Utrecht move up two places to sixth, though a victory could have put them in the hunt for Europe as well.
