NEC NIJMEGEN are in negotiations to sign Heerenveen defender Arjan Ebbinge as a replacement for departing captain Danny Hesp.

The NEC skipper has agreed a two-year contract with RBC Roosendaal after rejecting reduced terms to stay in Nijmegen.

The De Goffert club have moved swiftly to plug the gap by opening talks with Ebbinge, who is contracted to Heerenveen until the summer of 2004.

Ebbinge has been on loan at Helmond Sport this term and NEC are aiming to wrap up their swoop for the 28-year-old in the next few days.

Technical director Leen Looyen said: "If the talks go all right, then we will complete the deal with Ebbinge at the end of this week."
