GRONINGEN took a huge step towards securing their Eredivisie status with a gritty 1-0 win over RBC Roosendaal, while RKC Waalwijk strengthened their European claims with a confident home mauling of Heerenveen.

Groningen started the day just three points off the bottom, but Martin Drent`s headed effort from Mile Krstev`s centre on 65 minutes secured a vital three points.

Rick Hoogendorp (pictured) demonstrated why Ajax had targeted him by scoring the opening goal for RKC Waalwijk in their 3-0 win over Heerenveen, racing clear before striking a powerful shot.

Yuri Cornelisse added a second as RKC reinforced their hopes of securing a European place, with Jason Oost`s late strike putting a gloss on the scoreline.

Dirk Kuyt scored twice as Utrecht inflicted a 4-1 home defeat on Vitesse Arnhem.

The Gelredome is generally a tough place to go to, but Utrecht rose to the challenge and proved far too good for Vitesse.

Kuyt scored on 22 and 54 minutes, the latter a sublime lob, with Stijn Vreven and Paulus Roiha adding the others. Bob Peeters netted a consolation for Vitesse.
