Dutchman damages ankle ligaments while on international duty

Hamburg have announced that Dutch international defender Joris Mathijsen will be out for at least eight weeks due to an ankle injury. The 30-year-old centre-back damaged ligaments in his right ankle during Holland's 1-0 friendly win over Turkey on Wednesday and he will not be able to resume playing before the end of 2010. It is not thought that any ligaments or bones have been broken, but Hamburg's medical team have not yet decided whether or not Mathijsen will need to undergo surgery. Mathijsen told BILD: "I have seen pictures of the incident on TV and this really made me feel sick. It looked terrible. "At this point in time, I just know that nothing inside the foot looks broken, this is good news. "However, I am not yet able to say anything about when I am going to play again." Hamburg have been plagued by injuries this season, with the likes of goalkeeper Frank Rost and Dutch stars Eljero Elia and Ruud van Nistelrooy all spending time on the sidelines.
