Twente will have to make do without the services of club captain Spira Grujic until after the winter break.
Grujic has been struggling with an ankle injury for some time and opted to go under the knife this week after the problem failed to clear itself up.
"It just doesn't work properly," Grujic told De Twentsche Courant Tubantia. "I've been playing with pain for the last four months. It just could not continue that way."
The Serbian is expected to be fit to resume after the winter break, but his absence will be a major blow to Twente's Eredivisie hopes.
In other Eredivisie news, Ruud Knol has been forced to shelve his comeback plans.
The defender has been struggling with a knee injury since the summer of 2002 but was looking to feature for Vitesse's reserves against their Feyenoord counterparts.
The plans have been put on hold, however, as he picked up a thigh injury in training.
