Eredivisie: PSV thrash FC Utrecht 5-1 to restore advantage over Ajax

PSV Eindhoven restored their four-point cushion at the top of the Eredivisie after a 5-1 away win over 10-man FC Utrecht.

Having seen Ajax trim their lead to a single point with a 3-1 victory over Go Ahead Eagles on Saturday, PSV were on a mission to reassert their commanding position.

They swept ahead after 12 minutes through Adam Maher, and the dismissal of Mark van der Maarel 10 minutes later left Utrecht in disarray, more so when Memphis Depay converted the penalty that resulted from the foul.

PSV stretched 3-0 clear when Jorrit Hendrix scored in the 25th minute, and despite Ruud Boymans pulling one back five minutes into the second half, there was no fightback of substance on the cards.

Christian Kum's own goal in the 81st minute, and Georginio Wijnaldum's effort at the death rounded off PSV's five-goal haul.

Feyenoord nudged up to third after a 1-0 win at Cambuur Leeuwarden, secured by Jens Toornstra netting in the 37th minute.

Excelsior beat Twente 2-1, reacting to a second-minute opener from Luc Castaignos by levelling through Tom van Weert in the 17th minute and grabbing a 68th-minute winner from Jeff Stans.

PEC Zwolle and Heerenveen shared four goals, with Tomas Necid and Maikel van der Werff on target for the former and Mark Uth striking twice for the latter.
