Skipper targets move to foreign club

AZ captain Stijn Schaars is looking to move away from the Eredivisie club, preferably in the January transfer window. The Netherlands international, who arrived at AZ five years ago from Vitesse, is contracted with the club until the summer of 2012. However, 26-year-old Schaars is hoping to depart Alkmaar in the near future, insisting it is the most sensible move for both himself and the club. "I have my ambitions," Schaars told Dutch sports magazine NuSport. "Last summer I already made it clear I was open for a transfer. "There was some interest, but it didn't continue. My contract is running out in 2012. He added: "It's not my intention to extend it, also because the current financial situation at AZ will be lowered and I am an expensive player for the club. It's better if we both split up."

Overseas

Schaars is targeting a switch to an overseas outfit, and says the only other Dutch clubs he would consider joining are giants Ajax and PSV. "If anything shows up in the winter break, I would like to listen," he said. "Otherwise it will happen in the summer. "Mainly I think about a transfer to a foreign league, because in Holland only Ajax and PSV are interesting for me." Schaars' agent Karel Jansen confirmed a move is likely, but revealed there has not yet been any solid interest in the midfielder. "Last summer he could have left, but the clubs who contacted us didn't fit in with his future ambitions," said Jansen. "Other clubs showed interest but first they had to sell players. But some of them I know continue to follow Stijn. "The chance is he will leave in the winter break. At the moment, however, there is no concrete interest."
