AZ Alkmaar's lead at the top of the table was trimmed to one point as they drew with NAC Breda and Ajax beat ADO Den Haag.

AZ Alkmaar had been looking to strengthen their grip on first place but endured an afternoon of frustration at home to struggling NAC Breda.

The game ended in a goalless stalemate as NAC produced an impressive performance to keep their opponents at bay.

Ajax maintained their Eredivisie title challenge with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man ADO Den Haag.

The visitors took full advantage of the red card shown to Ali Boussaboun after 26 minutes to claim all three points thanks to goals from Jody Lukoki and Jan Vertonghen.

PSV Eindhoven climbed into third place courtesy of a crushing 5-1 success at home to a Heerenveen side that had been beneath them only on goal difference prior to kick-off.

Ola Toivonen opened the scoring after just five minutes, only for Heerenveen to equalise early in the second half when Erik Pieters netted an own goal.

Dries Mertens quickly restored PSV's advantage and scored again as the host ran riot in the final half hour, with Orlando Engelaar and Memphis Depay also finding the target.

Feyenoord moved level on points with FC Twente by virtue of a 2-0 away win as the battle for European qualification intensified.

After a goalless first half, an own goal from Nils Roseler finally broke the deadlock four minutes into the second period and Sekou Cisse secured the win in the closing minutes for the away side.

Utrecht came from behind to beat Groningen 3-1 and climb to a position of greater stability in the bottom half of the table.

Edouard Duplan cancelled out Dusan Tadic's opener before half-time and further goals from Cedric van der Gun and Alexander Gerndt sealed the victory.
