AZ go top of the table as VVV move off the bottom

AZ Alkmaar moved to the top of the Eredivisie table with victory at home against struggling Excelsior as Ajax won away to NAC Breda. VVV Venlo climbed off the bottom of the table by beating Groningen at home and Roda JC Kerkrade edged out NEC Nijmegen. A second-half brace from Maarten Martens secured AZ a 2-0 home win over Excelsior to depose PSV Eindhoven at the summit. Martens made the breakthrough on 58 minutes and added his second goal just two minutes later to clinch the points. Ajax also won 2-0 thanks to two second-half goals in their victory away to inconsistent NAC Breda. Dmitri Bulykin broke the deadlock midway through the second half and substitute Nicolas Lodeiro put the match beyond NAC with a second goal a minute from time. VVV moved up to third from bottom in the standings after a 2-0 home triumph over mid-table Groningen. Yannick Wildschut scored after 14 minutes for the home side and the lead was doubled before the half-hour mark by Uche Nwofor. Sanharib Malki's 56th minute goal was enough to hand Roda JC Kerkrade a 1-0 home win over NEC Nijmegen.
