Leaders PSV Eindhoven were stunned by Roda JC while Ajax came from two down to win at Groningen.
PSV had lost just once all season, but were undone by goals either side of half-time by Jan Saeijs (pictured) and Andreas Oper.
Ajax were also in danger of losing with first-half efforts from Evgenly Levchenko and Luis Suarez firing Groningen two-up.
However, the visitors fought back after the interval with Jaap Stam and Johnny Heitinga levelling the scores.
Just when it looked like the points would be shared Vitor Santiago snatched the win deep into injury time.
Twente stay fourth in the Eredivisie following a 3-1 victory over struggling ADO Den Haag.
Jeroen Heubach put the home side in front, but ADO levelled matters through Kirstoffer Weckstrom on 33 minutes.
Twente controlled the second half and after Sharbel Touma had restored their lead, Ismail Aissati bagged a late third.
Feyenoord remain just two points behind Twente after they secured a three-point haul with a 3-1 win over RKC Waalwijk.
Goals from Jonathan De Guzman and Luiz Andre-Bahia in the space of three first-half minutes put the home side in control.
Ricky van den Bergh's penalty pulled one back, but Angelos Charisteas' late third wrapped up the victory.
