Ajax and champions PSV Eindhoven threw down early markers with victories on Sunday.
The two big guns were handed home games for their season openers and they did not disappoint their fans.
Ajax ran out comfortable 5-0 winners over RKC Waalwijk, with Wesley Sneijder bagging two of the goals.
Ryan Babel opened the scoring on 33 minutes before Sneijder netted his first of the game before the break.
Johnny Heitinga added a third on 52 minutes and Sneijder made it four on 69 minutes.
RKC had no answer to Ajax's attacking play and Mauro Rosales capped a fine display with a fifth in the last minute.
PSV were made to work a little harder before overcoming NEC Nijmegen 3-1.
NEC defended well, but two goals in a minute before the break from Philip Cocu and Alex knocked the stuffing out of the visitors.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who is being linked with a move away from Eindhoven, brushed off the speculation to net the third on 57 minutes.
PSV took their foot off the gas in the final 30 minutes and NEC grabbed a late consolation through Rutger Worm.
Feyenoord were beaten on their travels, as Groningen produced a polished display to claim a 3-0 win.
All the goals came after the break, with Erik Nevland, Koen van de Laak and Glen Salmon sinking Feyenoord.
Heracles turned in a fine effort, running out 3-0 winners over Twente.
The home side went ahead on 37 minutes through Kwame Quansah and the visitors' task was made harder before the break, as former Bristol City man Luke Wilkshire was dismissed.
Diego Biseswar took the game by the scruff of the neck in the last ten minutes, as he created a goal on 81 minutes for Stefaan Tanghe before netting in injury time.
