PSV retained top spot in De Eredivisie with a 1-0 win whilst Feyenoord kept pace and Ajax slipped up again.

Guus Hiddink's league leaders had to battle back from going a man down against Sparta Rotterdam when Michael Lamey was dismissed for two bookable offences, but took the lead thanks to an own goal from Nebojsa Gudelj (75).

Sparta were unable to make their numerical supremacy pay and suffered further insult with a dismissal of their own when Danny Schenkel was shown his second yellow.

Erwin Koeman's Rotterdam side kept pace with their Eindhoven rivals when Andre Bahia struck on 28 minutes to seal the three points at the Gelredome in a 1-0 win over Vitesse.

Capital club Ajax were held to a 1-1 draw with NEC Nijmegen after falling behind to a Rob Wielaert goal after just five minutes.

Ajax striker Markus Rosenberg pulled Danny Blind's side level just seven minutes later, but the Amsterdam outfit could not push on and secure the win as they remained in sixth.

In the other early kick-off, Utrecht edged a five-goal thriller to beat ADO Den Haag 3-2 and move joint fourth with Groningen.

However, the visitors made hard work of it after opening up a three-goal lead through Dave van den Burgh (22), Robin Nelisse (28) and Dwight Tiendalli (52).

ADO ensured a nervy finish as former Rangers striker Michael Mols (59) and an injury-time strike from Geert den Ouden led to a thrilling climax.

In the Eredivisie's other game,  relegation strugglers Willem II picked up a point at home to Twente Enschede to move into double figures for the season.

Anour Hadouir found the net for 17th placed Tilburg club after just eight minutes, although Blaise N'Kufo (56) scored from the penalty spot to earn a draw.
