The Dutch giants looked to be cruising after building up a 3-0 lead, but Groningen scored twice in the last 10 minutes to set up a grandstand finale.
Markus Rosenberg scored after just seven minutes and Angelos Charisteas netted on 18 minutes. The Greek striker poached his second of the game on 68 minutes.
Groningen rallied in the closing stages with Glen Salmon netting 10 minutes from time and Yevgeny Levchenko scoring with a minute left.
Heerenveen came from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw at RKC Waalwijk.
RKC appeared primed to claim the three points after racing into a 2-0 half time lead, but they reckoned without a Heerenveen revival.
Gianni Zuiverloon scored after eight minutes for the hosts before Maarten Martens netted two minutes before half time.
But Klaas Jan Huntelaar inspired the visitors in the second half, scoring on 48 and 60 minutes to earn Heerenveen a point.
Roda JC Kerkrade picked up a 3-1 win at home to ADO Den Haag, with all the goals coming in the closing quarter of an hour.
Den Haag had Alberto Saavedra sent off for two bookable offences on 38 minutes and were hanging on for a draw until Ivan Vicelich scored on 76 minutes.
Andres Oper notched on 82 minutes for Roda before the hosts had Laszlo Bodnar dismissed on 84 minutes.
Just a minute later and Den Haag pulled one back through Joonas Kolkka, only for Boldiszar Bodor to score for Roda in injury time.
Vitesse Arnhem joined a clutch of clubs on 26 points after coming from behind to beat NAC Breda 2-1 at home.
Sander van Gessel scored on 52 minutes for NAC, but Matthew Amoah struck twice in the space of two minutes (69 & 71) to hand Vitesse the win.
