Ajax remain ten points adrift of Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven after a 2-1 home defeat to Twente Enschede.
Ronald Koeman's side have struggled to stay on the coat-tails of frontrunners PSV and AZ Alkmaar and Sunday's loss will be seen as a further blow to those title aspirations.
The Amsterdam giants started well enough when Julien Escude gave Ajax the lead after six minutes.
However, Twente pulled level nine minutes before the break through Blaise N'Kufo (pictured).
The visitors then stunned their hosts by scoring the eventual winner through Sharbel Touma mid-way through the second half.
Despite having Ramon Zomer sent off with eight minutes remaining, Twente held on for the three big points at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Vitesse Arnhem are up to fifth after a 3-0 victory over Roda JC Kerkrade at the Gelredome.
Youssouf Hersi put Vitesse in front after 23 minutes before Michael Jansen doubled the home side's advantage nine minutes later.
Matthew Amoah sealed the win for Vitesse with a third seven minutes before the end.
Utrecht are up two places to sixth after a 2-0 home win over ten-man NAC Breda.
Dave van den Bergh gave Utrecht the lead after two minutes before NAC's Mike Zonneveld was shown a red card for a second bookable offence on 57 minutes.
Sander Keller sealed victory for Utrecht four minutes later.
RKC Waalwijk are up three places to ninth after a 3-0 victory over Groningen at the Mandemakers Stadion.
Rick Hoogendorp gave the home side the lead after eight minutes before Rogier Molhoek doubled RKC's advantage on 22 minutes.
Jason Oost then made it three a minute later to seal an emphatic win for RKC.
