Ajax chairman John Jaakke has urged Tunisian defender Hatem Trabelsi to swallow his pride and return to the squad.

The defender had a major bust up with the club over the summer and lost a legal battle where he sought to have his contract cancelled.

Ajax coach Ronald Koeman stressed that he would not include Trabelsi in his plans and a transfer away from the Amsterdam ArenA seemed certain to happen.

However, despite strong interest from Arsenal and Newcastle, the Tunisian failed to move on before the transfer window slammed shut and he must now stay with Ajax until January at the earliest.

Jaakke has insisted Ajax will not release the Tunisian from his contract and is looking for Trabelsi to return to the fold.

"We don't give presents," Jaakke told AT5.

"For his sporting future, it is better (he returns).

"It will be difficult, but the healthy mind has to triumph."

It remains to be seen if the bridges can be rebuilt between Koeman and Trabelsi, although the African has been placed on the list of players eligible for the UEFA Champions League.

Ajax have also been given the green light to field new signings Luis Kasmirski and Mauro Rosales in Europe's top club competition.
